In 2021 he obtained Armenian citizenship and later renounced his Russian citizenship and moved to Armenia.

Vardanyan was arrested by the Azerbaijani State Border Service in 2023 while attempting to enter Armenia; In December 2025, prosecutors requested a life sentence for him.
